Review: Kaskade in Austin
Kaskade’s poppy nightlife-themed deep house was the sexiest thing I’d heard in high school. Back then, I worshipped his House of Om mix, and thought this tracks “Everything” and “It’s You, It’s Me” were the be-all, end-all of dance music. The vocalist on those tracks, Joslyn, still puts a little disco spell on me.
Kaskade tours a lot, but I hadn’t checked him out in three years until this past Saturday during the final night of Night Culture’s Austin Electronic Music Festival. My taste has changed, but Kaskade is still Kaskade.
I previously wrote about Night Culture’s success transplanting their Sky Lounge crowd to their new venue, Light Bar, but after Saturday, I wonder how much longer that crowd will stick around.
Kaskade is not exactly an underground dj or producer, and Light was way to small to accomodate the throngs of high-heels and dress shirts that turned out for what was literally, a hot event.
Local Renaissance Man, Francis Preve, was opening with a glitchy house set at 11:30 p.m. when I arrived. Already, the dance floor was locked tight with bodies. I maneuvered towards the bar for more breathing room, but got none as Kaskade took the decks.
It was fun to watch cute girls belt out Kaskade and Deadmau5′s “Move for Me” at the start of Kaskade’s set. The muscle bound boys in graphic tees shook it hard to his jazzy tunes, and beautiful blondes hopped on any available platform to practice their poses, er, I mean dance, but everyone was dripping sweat by the end of the night.
Just as I reached my tolerance level for the heat and pop-house, around 1:30 a.m., Kaskade played a remix of “Show me Love” and later, a remix of Paul Johnson’s “Get Down.” I stayed to boogie while the older house heads had their chance to sing along and dance on the now vacant go-go boxes.
Here’s to many more hot shows, figuratively speaking.

SO sad I missed Kaskade in Austin. UGH! When is this fabled electronic music festival here? I just moved out from CA, so I’m not in the loop on where people hear good house beats here in this rockabilly town.
Thanks!

Hi Meredith. I’m glad you asked. I’ll post a new write up about the upcoming fest.
